Jay Curry wanted his own smoker, and he ended up with a barbecue business. Columbia’s Spicewine Ironworks began six years ago when customers saw Jay working on a personal barbecue smoker at his Columbia Welding & Machine shop. People started placing orders for smokers before Jay could finish his own. Jay asked the other two owners of Columbia Welding & Machine, his brother Steve and his friend Randy Ham, to help out, and they created Spicewine Ironworks. They came up with the name for their business from a combination of their last names: curry, a spice, and ham, a swine.
At first, Spicewine Ironworks only sold smokers. The company’s web site, however, looked skimpy, so the owners developed sauces, rubs, smoking woods, and merchandise to go along with their smokers. “Things snowballed from there,” Jay says. Spicewine Ironworks now sells its products to barbecue enthusiasts nationwide. It has major distributors in California, New York, Iowa, and Florida.
