Glen Echo Country Club opens. The first golf course west of the Mississippi opened in Normandy, Missouri, as a club for affluent St. Louisiana to escape the pressures of city living. The course was the site of the 1904 Olympic Golf Tournament and also hosted several LPGA Tour events.
