September 4, 1813: Andrew Jackson and Thomas Hart Benton had a shootout followed by a knife fight in a Tennessee hotel’s hallway on this date. This caused Benton to leave Tennessee and move to Missouri.
Benton went to the US Senate from Missouri, and Jackson was elected from Tennessee. The only available desks forced them to sit side-by-side in the Senate Chamber.
