November 15, 1866: Born into slavery in Independence, Cathay Williams enlisted in the US Army at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis. She had already been serving the army as a laborer. She enlisted as a man calling herself William Cathay and served in the famous Buffalo Soldiers Regiment.
