March 10, 1940: The NAIA—National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics—was formed in Kansas City. It has actually been conducting a national basketball tournament there since 1937.
In1 940, the national Division 1 champion basketball team was little Tarkio College. Other not-so-surprising national champs included Central Missouri State (1937 & 1938), Southeast Missouri State (beating runner-up Northeast Missouri State in 1943), Southwest Missouri State (1952 & 1953), and Drury (1979).
