Capsule from Spirit of Freedom
June 19, 2002: Aviator Steve Fossett, a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, set off from Australia on his solo trip around the world in his balloon, Spirit of Freedom. On July 3, fourteen days, nineteen hours, and fifty minutes later, Fossett landed back in Australia, making him the first person to ever circumnavigate the globe in a hot air balloon.
