July 4, 1804: Lewis and Clark marked the 28th anniversary of the birth of the nation with a discharge of the cannon at sunrise and another at sunset. They made an amazing fifteen miles of progress upriver and the men were given an extra portion if whiskey in celebration of the day. They were near present day Rushville, MO (see on map). This was the first Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi! Happy Birthday, America.
