January 29, 1944: The last and largest battleship ever built, the USS Missouri, was launched. The ship was christened at its launching by Mary Margaret Truman, a US senator from Missouri and the daughter of President Harry Truman. It went on to serve as the point of surrender for Japan during World War II.
