George Caleb Bingham painted Order No. 11 in 1865 following the actual events that transpired when Order No. 11 was issued.
August 25, 1863: General Thomas Ewing issued the notorious Order No. 11, creating a demilitarized zone in Missouri. Jackson, Cass, Bates, and northern Vernon Counties were forcibly evacuated.
