The Downtown Kirkwood Winter Fireworks Festival will be Saturday, December 28 in Downtown Kirkwood. Before the fireworks display, local musical group Project 324 will perform at 5 p.m. at Station Plaza. At 6 p.m. the colorful Shaolin Lohan Pai Lion Dance Troupe will make an appearance as a large Chinese dragon accompanied by a group of Chinese drummers, meandering from Argonne Dr. to Station Plaza.
Kirkwood Mayor Arthur McDonnell will make brief remarks prior to the fireworks, which will begin at 6:30 pm. The display will be launched from the parking lot at Kirkwood City Hall, located at 139 S. Kirkwood Road.
Many merchants will have sales and specials on the festival day. Also, everything from fine dining to a quick meal is available within walking distance.
“Unfavorable Weather Date” is Sunday, December 29 at the same time and place. Ice, heavy snow or windy conditions could cause the event to be postponed. For weather-related event information, check the Downtown Kirkwood website.
Public safety is the Kirkwood Police and Fire Departments’ number one goal so, due to the large volume of pedestrian traffic anticipated, a detour route will be in place. The following streets will be closed: a portion of Kirkwood Road, from Argonne to W. Madison; W. Madison will be closed as well as the 100 block of E. Argonne, and a portion of the 100 block of W. Argonne. Northbound traffic on Kirkwood Road will be diverted to Taylor Ave. and southbound to Clay Ave. until spectators have dispersed.
Due to a private party, the Kirkwood Train Station will be closed to the public. Parking will be available in public lots, as well as the Station Plaza garages.
The Festival is hosted by the City of Kirkwood and Downtown Kirkwood Special Business District and underwritten by private donations. They include Simmons First National Bank; Des Peres Hospital; Riggs Construction & Design; Hardy Washington Jr., State Farm Agent; Billy G’s Kirkwood, Spencer’s Grill, Kirkwood Station Restaurant & Brewing Co.; Gaffner Realty, Barb & Jim Byerly; Barbara & Art McDonnell, Bert Forde & Dave White.
