Bluegrass & blossoms

Bluegrass music will drift through the blooms at Close Memorial Park at Springfield on July 19 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the park’s annual Bluegrass and Blossoms event.

The Missouri Mountain Gang with Larry Mayfield will play traditional and contemporary bluegrass, while Reel Greene will play traditional Irish and American music.

In addition to music, attendees can enjoy the park’s eighteen gardens, which will be in full bloom, and enjoy diverse, distinct areas that include a garden full of white blooms and a traditional rose garden. David Burton, civic communication specialist at the Greene County Extension Center, says the gardens are now in their full glory. Guided tours will be provided during the afternoon.

Bluegrass and Blossoms is sponsored by Friends of the Garden, Inc., a non-profit group leading fundraising efforts toward construction of a Botanical Center to serve Close and Nathanael Greene parks.

“The Bluegrass and Blossoms event is a fantastic opportunity to hear great bluegrass and traditional music and explore the gardens in their prime,” says Dr. Bob Kipfer, president of the Friends of the Garden organization.

Nathanael Greene Park is located at 2400 S. Scenic; Close Memorial Park is located on its south side. Musicians will perform near Drummond Lake, and attendees are asked to bring their own lawn chairs. Picnicking is welcome.
