Michael Lucero and Bonnie Seeman Art Exhibit
October 24, 2008 - November 29, 2008
Where: St. Louis
Michael Lucero. The Duane Reed Gallery is excited to present the
works of internationally acclaimed ceramic artist Michael Lucero. The exhibition opens
Friday, October 24th with an reception to meet the artist that evening from 5 – 8 pm.
Michael Lucero is one of the preeminent sculptors of our time. He received his MFA
from the University of Washington in 1978. Since then, Lucero has challenged the
traditional perceived limitations of clay by giving it the primacy of painting or marble
sculpture. An ardent admirer of global culture, Lucero incorporates stylistic references
from various cultures into his work (pre Columbian, Native American, European and
African), creating complex, hybrid forms that comment on the changing nature of
society and the environment in which we live.
His work can be seen in the collections of the American Craft Museum, The Carnegie
Museum, The Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, LACMA, The Metropolitan
Museum of art and countless other around the country and abroad.
Gallery hours: Tuesday through Friday 10-5pm, Saturday 12-4pm.
The Duane Reed Gallery is pleased to present the works of
internationally acclaimed artist Bonnie Seeman. The exhibition opens Friday, October 24th with an
reception to meet the artist that evening from 5 – 8 pm.
Seeman’s success and international appeal can be seen in success of her work at ARCO in Madrid,
FIAC in Paris, and this year’s sell out at Art Basel Miami. In addition, she was the recipient of the Louis
Comfort Tiffany Foundation 2005 Biennial Competition Award. Seeman’s work can be seen in the
numerous collections around the world, including The Mint Museum of Craft and Design, The Racine
Art Museum, and the World Ceramic Exposition Foundation in Korea. She is also currently being
presented in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in “One of a Kind: The
Studio Craft Movement” through September 3rd.
Seeman’s work, which was recently reviewed in the New York Times looks at how the utilitarian object
can be used as a means of narration. “I am very interested in the utilitarian object and how it can be
used as a means of narration. My work blends the macabre with the beautiful, which acts as a
metaphor for the fragility and resiliency of life. By using my interest in morphology and anatomy I
present the viewer with a detailed examination of the living structures of the natural world. The
juxtaposition of the botanical and anatomical elements can simultaneously be jarring, disquieting, and
beautiful. This dichotomy also enhances the tactile quality of the work enticing personal interaction
with the viewer. While producing my work, these elements way on my mind until a peace reaches its
fruition.” –artist statement

Scottish Kirkin' of the Tartans
November 01, 2008
Where: Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1551 E Portland St, Springfield
The Scottish Saint Andrew’s Society of Springfield will host the Kirkin’ of the Tartans on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1551 E Portland St, Springfield. The service will begin at 7.00 pm and will last approximately one hour.
The Kirkin’ Service is a traditional Scottish-American church parade (Kirk is the Scottish word for church) to honour Scottish heritage and the feast day of St. Andrew, Scotland’s patron saint, on November 30. The service will also recognize the Scottish roots of the Presbyterian Church.
The Kirkin’ service began during the Second World War, when Rev. Peter Marshall of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church held services entitled “the Kirkin’ of the Tartan” to raise funds for British war relief. The service includes traditional Scottish prayers and hymns, kilts & tartan, bagpipes, and other aspects of Scottish culture. Scottish attire is encouraged, but not required. An offering will be collected for an appropriate charity, in keeping with the spirit of the original Kirkin’.
After the service, there will be a reception in the parish hall, and the society will hold a brief annual meeting.
The event is free and open to the public – all are welcome, regardless of heritage – you do not have to be Scottish to attend!

While producing my work, these elements way on my mind until a peace reaches its

juxtaposition of the botanical and anatomical elements can simultaneously be jarring, disquieting, and
beautiful. This dichotomy also enhances the tactile quality of the work enticing personal interaction

The
