Ramblin' Duck Blog

This morning, a day after the thunder snow in this part of Missouri, the pair of Canadian geese that stopped at our farm earlier in the week had signaled to 38 of their friends to come on by. They’re here now, in a good place to wait out the weather, with two other ramblin’ ducks of another feather. The thing is they didn’t stop for the scenery, or even because our three farm dogs scowl fiercely but don’t actually bite. They stopped for the same reason we stop at cosy home kitchens and eateries—the food is good and plentiful, and the company is warm. In fact, as I watch, I see the rump end of four geese as they dive for the good stuff along our pond banks. They rise. They serenely paddle in pairs, nodding to each other.
