Baseball Legend Ozzie Smith Welcomed into Hall of Fame
Missouri baseball fans were doing back flips yesterday with the induction of Ozzie Smith into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame as a Missouri Sports Legend. I was honored to attend this special event at the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in Springfield along with about 700 other Missouri sports enthusiasts. One of those included another Missouri Sports Legend, Whitey Herzog, who introduced Ozzie and was his manager at the St. Louis Cardinals during Ozzie's golden years. And they were truly golden as he won 13 consecutive Gold Glove awards as shortstop. Whitey, who managed both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals during his Hall of Fame career as a Major League manager, credited Ozzie for his own success and said he was the greatest player he ever had the privilege of managing. "He was a true leader both on and off the field. And he continues his leadership role in many activities and organizations he is involved with in the town he calls home, St. Louis, Missouri," Whitey said.
The venue of these proceedings is worth a visit the next time you are in the Springfield area. The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame is just east of Hwy 65 on Hwy 60. You'll find lots of fascinating exhibits and bronze statues with stories about Missouri's Sports Legends. Check them out here and you'll also find more about Ozzie's induction.
