It's a Marshmallow World

Roadtrips. Boating. Lake homes. Wave runners. Swimming. The Bagnell Dam Strip. All these things remind me of the Lake of the Ozarks. But I hail from Eldon, a mere 12 miles up the road.
When introducing myself, I’m almost always met with questions about my home and upbringing, most commonly, “Where is Eldon?” My natural response is, “Near the Lake of the Ozarks.” That alone usually puts Eldon’s location in perspective on the map.
Growing up, I had always heard that Eldon is the “gateway” to the Lake of the Ozarks from the north. It has proven to be true, as Eldon has a considerable increase in traffic when tourists make their way to their summer lake homes for a few months of fun and sun.
Most might pass through Eldon with barely a fleeting glance. But the next time you travel to the Lake of the Ozarks, I would invite you to stop in Eldon to take in the quaint atmosphere, friendly people, and of course, a Marshmallow Pepsi.
Almost every rural town in America has one restaurant that visitors must stop at when passing through—a “dive,” if you will. Eldon is no different, and the Cree Mee is its name.
A large red barn turned drive-in, the Cree Mee’s sign boasts it is the home of the “World Famous” chili dog, but a Marshmallow Pepsi is where it’s really at. Nearly every time I drive through Eldon, I have to stop to get a Marshmallow Pepsi, a perfect blend of creamy marshmallow cream and ice cold Pepsi. The recipe for Marshmallow Pepsis is a staff secret, and I have never been able to duplicate the drink on my own.
My high school years included an unimaginable number of Marshmallow Pepsis. My friends and I spent our time under the awning of the Cree Mee at a picnic table, visiting about school that day or what would be happening in town that night.
For most, a day on the Lake might include a variety of food and drinks from Lake Ozark or Osage Beach. But for me, a day on the water is not complete without a large Marshmallow Pepsi from the Cree Mee Drive-In!
