The Missouri State Fair opens today, and we’re there. We’re in the Mathewson Exhibition Center this year, so we’ll have a great view of the events going on there when we’re not talking to visitors. We have a great discount for new orders at the fair this year, so you can do some early Christmas shopping if you stop by. You can also get a sneak peak at the two calendars we’re putting together for 2012.
We have amazing cool weather for opening day. But hot or cool, I always enjoy the fair. Here’s what I like to do:
See some of the free comedy shows and strolling entertainers. Eat a corn dog. Watch some of the free talent shows. Drink some freshly made lemonade. Walk through the dairy barns and dream of having my own milk cow. (I milked cows enough growing up to know what I’d be getting into.) Share part of a funnel cake. Oooh and aaah at a horse show and check for Missouri mules in the horse barn. Visit the Missouri Beef restaurant for at least one meal. For the first time, inspired by my own chicken coop, visit the chicken barn and exhibits. Cool off in the highway gardens. Walk fast by all the snake exhibits in the Conservation Building, because even looking at them gives me the creeps. Study the art and the photography in the Fine Art building looking for new story ideas and photographers we should meet. Watch some of tomorrow’s leaders giving presentations in the 4-H building and be amazed once again, at some of their creations. Indulge in an ice cream treat. Enjoy a grand stand concert, possibly Kenny Wayne Shepherd, maybe the Doobie Brothers too.
And I haven’t even mentioned my walk through the Flower Building, the carnival, stopping to watch the strolling entertainers, or the Missouri Idol contest, the riding and shooting demonstrations, and so much more.
I’ve been a fan of the fair since I was a little kid saving my quarters for rides. And we’ve had the magazine there almost every year since we started. It should tell you something that I still love our state fair!
