Listen to the Music
It’s springtime in Missouri and the hills are alive with the sound of music — apologies to Julie Andrews and the Von Trapps of course. Make a point to get out and listen to some great music this week. And no matter where you roam you’re going to find something that strikes a chord, even if you’re a true rolling stone. From Boonville (Diamond Rio, May 15) to Branson (Bill Medley and Paul Revere and the Raiders, now through October 24 ) to the Wildwood Springs Lodge (Poco, May 8 and 9) to the Blue Note in Columbia, you’re going to find something to sing about.
Danita and I went to the Eagles in Columbia last month and they were as good as when I saw them thirty years ago. I know that’s hard to believe, but you’ll find that like fine wine, women, and violins (and Martin guitars) some things do improve with age. (Has anyone noticed that I slipped that nice comment in about women yet?) But speaking of Martin guitars I bought mine thirty-one years ago, and it does sound better every year.
I’ve been playing an instrument of some kind for longer than I want to put in print, but I have had the pleasure of being in a band with my youngest daughter, Marissa, and two of her friends for about a year now, and that has been more fun than anything I’ve done in years. We play a pretty eclectic set list including everything from Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Leonard Cohen, and Johnny Cash covers to many originals. The only problem is we don’t have a name yet. Or, at least one that we can all agree on. So if you have a the greatest all-time band name ever that you want to throw out to us, please feel free to do so. Just as long as it doesn’t have anything to do with death or civil war or famine or pestilence. All those have been taken, Thank You Very Much!
