It's a Hard Knock Life
"Where are we?" was the first thing my kids uttered as we stepped out of the truck onto the street in Arrow Rock last night. We visited The Hodgepodge for ice cream cones--chocolate with Snickers--then we headed over to the Lyceum. Arrow Rock is small, even by small-town standards. The historic charm on a warm summer night is irrestible, though, and the Lyceum has been a part of this community for forty-eight years now.
Annie is the current offering, and the cast and crew did a wonderful job with this well known tale. Ms. Hannigan, played by Marcy McGuigan, was particularly good at inciting laughter in the audience. And little Elly Scheuerell, the littlest of the orphans in the orphanage, was amazing.
What a wonderful way to escape. Go to the theater. But Annie provided more than a couple of hours to escape from reality. Annie communicated something more. In this time of uncertainty and economic hardship, Annie reminds us that "the sun'll come out tomorrow." Interesting, even though I'd seen the play before and seen the movie, just hearing the optomistic storyline and the positive songs gave my spirit a boost too. Nice when that happens.
