A Night at the Lyceum
Last night I attended opening night at the Lyceum Theatre in Arrow Rock. More than twenty years ago, my two daughters, Jennifer and Sarah, performed at the Lyceum. They were in several productions, Annie, Music Man, and Mid-Summers Night Dream, were a few I fondly remember. Yes, I was a stage mother. Did I drag them kicking and screaming to auditions, and then push them out on stage? No, they seemed to love the applause, the costumes, and makeup and the chance to pretend.
For two hours last night, I sat watching the musical Hairspray. I laughed at Edna Turnbald antics and booed the evil Mrs. VonTussle. I rooted for true love to prevail and remembered that it’s not the size of your waist but what’s inside that counts. My only worry was if Tracy Turnblad’s dream of integrating the Corny Collins Show would come true. If you haven’t been to the theater in awhile, plan to attend this summer. Last night I left the world and all my worries for a short time, and remembered why I became a “stage mom.”
