Winter's Bone
From the backwoods, banjo-strumming folk songs to the gray, mystical mountains of the Ozarks, Winter's Bone is filled with Missouri. Based on the novel by Missourian Daniel Woodrell and filmed on-site in both Taney and Christian counties, the Sundance Festival-winner is a serious look at the prevalence of meth "cooking" in rural Missouri and one girl's fight to save her family and home.
Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence) is a brave, no-nonsense teenager taking care of her younger siblings and sick mother after her father goes on the run and puts their house up for his bond. Ree is told that if her father does not show up for his court date, they will lose their house, so she goes around digging up any information she can from the criminals who know her father and his dark business.
Director and one of Winter Bone's screenwriters, Debra Granik, wanted to use as many local actors as possible. She employed Meredith Cisco, a well-respected local musician who also plays a small role in the film. After the Sundance screenings, Granik made sure to bring the film back to southern Missouri for the appropriate local approval.
For another look at Missouri's meth issue, "Just One," which ran in the April/May issue of Missouri Life, profiles addicts, law-enforcement officers, counselors, and lawyers who deal with meth on a daily basis.

Oh, I can't wait to see it! I just finished the book. Something tells me the movie will be even better.
