Perfect Winter Day

For the past two weeks, I've been thinking, "Enough of this winter!" In fact, I've been saying, "We're having a real Iowa winter." I left Missouri as a young woman and lived fifteen winters in Iowa. One of the things I like about Missouri is that we have one less month of winter than Iowa (two weeks either side of season).

And the last two weeks of grey have had me kind of ...well, depressed is too strong, maybe "in the doldrums" is accurate.

But this morning, in spite of the heavy snow, I pulled on my coveralls and went for a walk in the woods to check on our horses. I soon found myself smiling and thankful for the beauty. The sky was still grey but what a different mood. Go outside. Find a quiet park or trail to walk in the woods. Dress warm so you'll enjoy it. Rediscover the sense of wonder children have playing in the snow.

Then to complete my definition of a perfect winter day, I drove into Columbia for a lunch with the director of Columbia's Convention and Visitor's Bureau. We went to Grand Cru, sat by the fireplace, and ate shrimp fondue over grilled bread. Try it!

And now, time to trek homeward over sloshy roads. I have a bottle of Chaumette Bouvet Blend I'm eager to try in front of my own fireplace. Did I mention "Perfect Winter Day?"
